Microblogging
Considering I’ve had this blog for like 3 years at this point and have made all of 10 posts, you could say this thing is…. going. I don’t know about ‘well’ but it is going. I’ve tried to make blogs in the past and posted 3 posts in a week before vanishing never to grace the free platform they’re on again. This one is a bit different in that I’m hosting it myself, but it’s also different in that it’s so customizeable.
Over the past week I’ve been experimenting with a plugin for microblogging! So I should now be able to make tweet-style posts of brief thoughts that don’t warrant the multi-paragraph treatment. I’m sure a lot of you are now thinking “Why not just use Twitter? Or the Bluesky account you link in the header of your profile?” To which I say: I don’t know why, but this is better.
Those sites just feel very hostile. Bluesky is better than Twitter, but posting into the void of either of them feels worse than posting on my own site. My blog is ActivityPub-enabled, so my posts go out to the Fediverse anyway. If I wanted to build a following I’d probably be better off on an established site, but ‘building a following’ isn’t why I’m on the internet. I just want to share things.
So now I can share the small insignificant things next to the big important things, all from the same site. My site.
